Welcome to the UNC-PRIMES FAQ page, the source for all your questions and needs! This page will be periodically updated relative to questions we receive and answer, so please send us any questions you may have via email or through the 'Get in Touch' section of the home page.
Here at UNC-PRIMES we encourage all interested current high school students to submit an application! Regardless of your background, we welcome current students from all backgrounds and strive to foster inclusivity and promote diversity. Potential financial assistance is available to all prospective scholars.

​1. Will I be able to understand and contribute to research?
Absolutely! Our distinguished team of mentors and directors will be there every step of the way to ensure you not only understand the concepts but can apply them during and after the program.
2. Do I need any background knowledge?
While it is helpful to have experience in a broad range of disciplines, you do not need extensive background knowledge to be successful in the program. The asynchronous pre-summer course will provide you will relevant background knowledge, with mentors there to answer questions along the way. The only real prerequisite is enthusiasm and an interest to learn an exciting new skill!
3. Can I submit a recommendation not from a teacher?
While we typically require a recommendation from a teacher, we may accept additional recommendations on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to submit any additional recommendation material, please reach out via email.
4. How do I apply for the program?
Go to the apply page of the UNC-PRIMES site, input your information, then complete the application form. For the recommender portion, we will contact your recommender directly so you need only provide relevant information on the applicant form. If you have any trouble with the application, then please reach out so a team member can assist you!
4. Do I have to complete the asynchronous short course?
Yes, as a program admit you are expected to complete a pre-summer hybrid course so as to prepare for the on-campus portion of the program. During the short course, there will be weekly office hours and easy access to expert mentors to help guide you through the material.
5. What can I do to prepare?
The best and first thing you should do is apply to the program! We encourage all interested high school students to apply. After that go look for interesting videos related to the field to better familiarize yourself with terminology and, most importantly, get excited for the program!
4. When is the deadline to apply?
The priority deadline for the application is January 15th, 2025 11:59:00 PM EST; however, we will continue accepting applications until January 31st, 2025 11:59:00 PM EST. For any specific questions, please reach out via email.
6. Will financial assistance be provided?
Funding is available for all successful applicants. By covering costs related to travel and living expenses, we aim to reduce financial barriers for participants to engage in this program. For more detailed information, please reach out via email.
